Holmfirth Church

Holmfirth Church in West Yorkshire has various churches for different religious faiths such as Anglican, Baptist and Methodist. It is regular for a town to have more than one church and Holmfirth is no exception.

Regrettably church attendance has been plummeting for the last 50 years in the UK, with 15% of the population attending at least once every month, in spite of everything Atheists and Agnostics are still in a minority, representing 33% of the populace.

We think the explanation for the decline is in simple terms that people do not have faith in God any more, with violence raging across the world and the wealth of the nation in a bad way it's easy to comprehend peoples lack of faith. In our opinion the Church needs to be re-branded, if you think of the fundamental values of Church such as togetherness, family, marriage and community leaving aside God for a second! If you reflect on all the good things that Churches stand for in our Holmfirth community then it is truly remarkable numbers are going down. Surely we all want our Holmfirth to be a wonderful spot to be alive, where inhabitants get along, they assist each other in times of need and people give to each other without asking anything back in return. So what we are asking is for you to go along to your Holmfirth church and plea for change, you want to help, and you think it is only right and proper that the rest of your district chip in and help with things. The UK is on its knees because nobody wants to work to a superior goal...it is time for change...come on people..let us get organized and make this happen

Churches in the past and future have collaborated with other organisations such as local schools, groups such as the beavers, cubs and scouts as well as being prominent in assisting other groups of inhabitants such as the lonely, feeble and abused. The church is seen as doing good causes which sees them in a good light.

Churches have been seen in a dim light recently with the pope resigning, the first pope in more than six hundred years, and nobody was entirely sure of the reason why, many people have speculated that it is not just a matter of the pope getting older and not being able to carry out his job to the fullest.

The scottish Cardinal Keith O'Brien in recent times resigned after admitting sexually inappropriate moves to young men schooling to be priests, taking into consideration his anti-homosexual rhetoric in the past, this was seen as "do as I say not as I do"!

On the lighter side of things churches are seen as a very quiet spot to be - a good place to cogitate on the things that are happening in your life at the present moment.

A game we used to play as children was to find the oldest memorial..i.e. the earliest date, that's a diversion that can keep children smiling for a while as well as giving them good exercise as they walk/run round the graveyard.
