Wem Church

Wem Church in Shropshire has numerous churches for diverse religious faiths such as Anglican, Baptist and Methodist. It is regular for a town to have more than one church and Wem is no exception.

Unfortunately church attendance has been sinking for the last fifty years in the UK, with 15% of the population presiding at least once per month, nevertheless Atheists and Agnostics are still in a minority, representing 33% of the residents.

We think the cause for the decline is simply that people do not believe in God any more, with violence raging across the world and the wealth of the nation in a bad way it is easy to appreciate peoples lack of faith. In our opinion the Church needs to be re-branded, if you think of the core values of Church such as togetherness, family, marriage and community leaving aside God for a second! If you contemplate on all the good things that Churches stand for in our Wem community then it is actually amazing figures are going down. Surely we all want our Wem to be a fantastic place to be alive, where individuals get along, they assist one another in times of need and people offer to each other without asking anything back in return. So what we are asking is for you to go along to your Wem church and plea for change, you want to assist, and you think it is only right and proper that the rest of your district chip in and help with things. The UK is on its knees because nobody wants to work to a superior goal...it is time for change...come on people..let's get together and make this happen

Churches in the past and future have collaborated with other organisations such as community schools, groups such as the beavers, cubs and scouts as well as being prominent in assisting other groups of inhabitants such as the lonely, meager and abused. The church is seen as doing good causes which sees them in a good light.

Churches have been seen in a dim light recently with the pope resigning, the first pope in more than six hundred years, and nobody was entirely sure of the reason why, a lot of people have speculated that it is not just a matter of the pope getting older and not being able to carry out his job to the fullest.

The scottish Cardinal Keith O'Brien recently resigned after admitting sexually inappropriate moves to young men training to be priests, considering his anti-gay words in bygone times, this was seen as "do as I say not as I do"!

On the lighter side of things churches are seen as a very quiet space to be - a good space to cogitate on the things that are going on in your life at the present moment.

A game we used to play as children was to find the oldest headstone..i.e. the earliest date, that's a diversion that can keep kids smiling for a while as well as giving them good exercise as they run/walk round the graveyard.
